In the nineteen seventies, the Chembur Trombay region of the eastern suburbs of the city did not have an educational institution to offer courses after S.S.C., with the result that those who were keen on studying further had to go all the way to the city. As this involved traveling a long distance from their homes, spending a lot of time and money, it was a deterrent for the lower strata of society who formed a substantial proportion of the local population. Hence there was a need to set up a college in this part of the city for such students.

With this end in view, the Chembur Trombay Education Society was established in 1976 by a group of eminent educationists, philanthropists and social workers. Prominent among them were late Shri. Sharad Acharya (ex mayor of the city and son of veteran freedom fighter Late Narayan Gajanan Acharya), late Shri. D.K. Marathe ( a philanthropist serving the cause of education ), late Shri. B.M. Pant (a renowned educationist and a popular teacher), Adv. Leeladhar B. Dake and Shri. S. Pattabhiraman.

By their sustained efforts, ably supported by equally enthusiastic eminent persons of the locality a college by the name of "N.G.Acharya & D.K.Marathe College of Arts, Science and Commerce" affiliated to the University of Bombay was established in 1978. Towards funding of the institute the Society received substantial donations from Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd., Acharya Udyog and Shri. D.K.Marathe in the form of seed money.

Initially the college started functioning from the premises of Jawahar Vidya Bhavan, Chembur with just one division. Later the Bombay Municipal Coproration was kind enough to allot to the society a piece of land admeasuring an area of 12537 sq. metres on N.G.Acharya Marg, Near Subhash Nagar, Chembur to raise a building for the college. The college shifted to the new premises in 1982.

The college has now a spacious building with an annexe structure of seven floors to house all its wings. At present the college runs a Junior College in the streams of Arts, Science and Commerce with an option for vocational subjects like I.T. and Computer Science, an aided degree college offering undergraduate courses in Arts, Science and Commerce and a Self Finance Section offering undergraduate professional courses, postgraduate courses in Science (Chemistry) and Commerce and doctoral research facility in Chemistry.

The College has now a student strength of around 7000.

We are starting full fledged College of Architecture from Academic Year 2014-15. More professional and job oriented courses are on the anvil.
