Positive Journalism, future of the media of tomorrow

Mr Vijay Kuvalekar, a noted senior journalist and editor-n-chief of Zee 24 Taas news channel was invited at N.G Acharya and D.K Marathe College for giving insights on ‘Current trends in Media’ on 29th July 2019.

With decades of experience in journalism and editorial leadership for Sakaal group of newspapers and as an ex- chief information commissioner for the state of Maharashtra, Mr Kuvalekar had a lot to share with the students.

Secretary of CTES, Shri Ramesh Mhapankar , Joint Secretary, Shri Subodh Acharya,  Principal, Dr. Vidyagauri Lele, Vice Principal, Ms. Akila Maheshwari, BMM Co-ordinator  Mr. Yogesh Dhanjani and other BMM faculties were present for the programme. Mass Media students from our college as well as other colleges gathered in the seminar hall to gain insights.

After the introduction, Principal’s address and felicitation ceremony, Mr Kuvalekar enthusiastically shared his insights on trends in Media.

Mr Kuvalekar highlighted the need for positivity in journalism, he advised the students to refrain from negative, sensational and dramatic journalism, emphasizing that morals and ethics shape the journalism of tomorrow and journalistic integrity is necessary for any future journalist.

Through his speech Mr Kuvalekar narrated a series of personal experiences through the Kargil war super heroes, about how teachers should make students experience the plight of wounded soldiers through visits to such organizations and give them a sense of reality on field.

Kuvalekar Ji also spoke about an immense need of objectivity in journalism; He narrated an experience about freedom fighter and a noted journalist, Mr. Balgangadhar Tilak. When he was requested by editorial team of Dnyanprakash , a newspaper that usually criticized him in editorials,  to write an editorial for them, he criticized himself, to not appear biased and to reinforce the faith of people in the newspaper. Mr Kuvalekar asserted the need for transparency and clarity through this example. After an array of positive insights into the world of media, Mr Kuvalekar answered the questions of young minds and the session was open for question and answers.

Students asked questions dealing with ‘political pressure and bureaucracy in journalism’ to which Mr Kuvalekar replied that, ‘in the end one should follow and do what is right and not  succumb to pressures’. Students also probed on ‘how progressive journalism is under attack’ to which Mr Kuvalekar said that ‘both sides, regressive and progressive have their own dimensions and challenges, a media enthusiast should always maintain objectivity in reporting’ Mr. Kuvalekar emphasised on the importance of ethics and positivity in journalism while he addressed other questions.

The session was informative, enlightening and truly justified the scope of recent trends in media and audience expectations. The event ended with a vote of thanks.
